As Theseus slays the Tyrant king, Creon, the gravely injured princes, Arcita and Palamon are healed on the condition that they spend the rest of their lives as Athenian prisoners.
The prisoners catch a glimpse of Emily. They are immediately infatuated by her and her love becomes the reason for the pitfall of the oath-sworn brotherhood.
Palamon, Emily, and Arcita all pay a visit to the temples of Venus, Diana, and Mars. Palamon asks for Emily's love and Emily asks for chastity, and if not the first wish, then for the Knight who loves her most to marry her. Arcita asks for victory in tomorrow's battle.
The Knights battle it out with their armies. The battle ends with Arcita bringing Palamon to the stake.
However, the battle concludes with Arcita's horse throwing him off and gravely injuring him due to an earthquake. With his last words, Arcita proclaims his love for Emily and asks her to consider Palamon as a lover.
As Athens mourns the death of Arcita, the doleful couple is convinced through Egeus' wisdom to move on. They wed.
