  • The Soviets deepened their military involvment in Egypt. The Soviets flew combat over the Suez Canal and were manning missle batteries against Israeli planes in Egypt. A Thrust began in 1970.
  • Oh no!!
  • Oh no! 20,000 Soviet military advisers and technicians must be expelled in Egypt.
  • Hello, I am the U.S. president. I am warning you that our military force is very strong and is not like any other. We are the only force that can influence prospects for peace in the Middle East.  
  • The US replaced Soviets as Egypt's main military supplier. During the Cold War, Egypt transferred loyalty from one superpower to another. Gradually, US gained influence in Egypt. They sought to exclude the Soviets from the evolving peace process.
  • Our goal of excluding the Soviet Union from regional fairs is finally working !!
  • In 1973, the Yom Kippur War occurred. Egypt's shifting allegiances may have spurred the war. Egypt was unable to continue its endless crusade against Israel. However, the end of the war gave Sadat, Egypt president, the opportunity to seek peace.
  • Finally...peace!
  • The Emergency Law 162 of 1958 circumscribes any non-governmental political activity. In 1980, this law had an 18-month break. Today, this law only applies to terror and drug cases.
  • This law is a major grievance of January, 2011 protesters.
