  • At the beginning, The highwayman travels to the inn by horse
  • "And the highwayman came riding--riding--riding,"
  • As soon as the highwayman arrives, he whistles to get the attention of the landlord's daughter
  • When the highwayman tells Bess, the landlord's daughter, that he is going to steal some gold and run away into the sunset with her, Tim the ostler overhears the conversation and goes and informs the king of the highwayman's plan
  • "And dark in the dark old inn-yard a stable wicket creaked where Tim the ostler listened
  • The repetition describes what the highwayman is doing
  • King George's troops capture the highwayman and Bess
  • Bess gets tied up and hung with a musket at her side and with the musket, Bess commits suicide
  • Finally, the highwayman tries to escape but gets shot down
