  • 'was a quack' means that Fortunato knew nothing about painting and gemmary; he was a fake compared to what he presented himself to be.

  • Connisseurship is expert knowledge that qualifies one to pass judgment in a particular area. Anyone with this kind of knowledge is very trustworthy with providing valuable feedback.

  • There's a 'T' in both turned and towards, and the words are right next to each other which is an example of alliteration.

  • The earliest indication I had of this was a low moaning cry from the dept of the recess. It was not a cry of a drunken man. There was a long and obstinate silence.....
  • He represented the way the niter looked by comparing it to moss. He described it as moss to give you a better picture of what the niter really looked like.

  • The niter! See, it increases. It hangs like moss upon the vaults. We are below the river's bed.
  • He is talking very aggressively to the woman which is an example of the word accost.
