Once upon a time, there was a nice young boy named Frederick Douglass, He was a slave now traded to the Aulds, a very rich family. Mrs. Auld asked Douglass if he knew how to read, and answered “No”. So Mrs. Auld started teaching Frederick Douglass how to read, until Mr. Auld came in the room, seeing Mrs. Auld teaching Frederick. Mr. Auld and Mrs. Auld went across the hall, talking about teaching a slave how to read. “What are you doing? You can't teach a slave how to read!” said Mr. Auld, “If you teach a slave how to read, He will be spoiled from working and wont do any work that He is supposed to do.” said Mr. Auld.
Now, Frederick was forbidden to read. It’s like ever since Mrs. Auld started teaching Frederick how to read, Mrs. Auld turned from a nice woman, to a mean mistress. When Frederick found a book, Mrs. Auld took the book and hid it somewhere. Everytime Frederick took a small break, Mrs. Auld screamed at him trying to get him to work again. “How to learn to read?” Frederick thought, “How to learn to read?”.
Later that day, the Aulds made Frederick go on some errands to the grocery shop. On the way, He thought the same question again, “How to learn to read?”. When he got to town, Frederick saw a little boy reading a book. “Hey, how are you?” said Frederick. “I’m good.” answered the little boy. “What are you doing here?” said Frederick. “My Mom says that she needs to make dinner.” said the little boy. “Well, here I have some bread, and I’ll give it to you if you show me that book.” said Frederick. “Ok.” said the little boy. “Do you know how to read?” asked the little boy, Frederick answered no. “Well, I will teach you.” said the little boy. The boy taught Frederick, He never said the name of the little boy to anyone because the boy could get in big trouble for teaching a slave how to read.
