Storyboard Text

  • She decided to melt the chocolate on a plastic spoon over a candle.
  • In the recipe for the frosting on my cake, I need to melt 2 table spoons of chocolate. Since the amount of chocolate being melted is little, I don't want to turn on the stove.
  • This took too long. She decided to melt the chocolate on a metal spoon. This was faster but still took a long time. This is called conduction. Conduction is the transfer of heat energy in solids. It happens through direct collisions of particles. This has a low efficiency.
  • I wish there was a way to make this faster.
  • I wonder why the metal spoon worked better.
  • This is because metal is a better heat conductor than plastic. This has something to do with free electrons. Metals have a positively charged nucleus which does not grip electrons. This results in free electrons orbiting the nucleus. This also allows the heat to travel more quickly and efficiently. Heat conduction is still slow though. Plastic is more of an insulator. An insulator is a poor heat conductor.
  • I am sweating!
  • This is an example of heat radiation. Radiation is the transfer of heat in waves, with out the need for particles. It is therefore very efficient.
  • Welcome to the tour of the mountains!... Over here you see the...
  • Lets go inside. Maybe then I will feel better.
  •  My shirt is light. Therefore, the waves from the sun are reflecting on my shirt because the sun waves reflect light colors. This is called reflection
  • That is because you are wearing a black shirt. The waves from the sun absorb dark colors. This is called absorption.
  • The waves from the sun pass through clear objects. This is called transmission.  We should really have blinds in here!
  • I am a little bit better but it is still hot in here!
