Although I'm pretty sure the video we watched in class said Graham Bell Invented the teletypewriter, everything I've seen online says it was Robert Weitbrecht. He developed it in the 1960s along with the resigned of the acoustic coupler. These two advancements improved deaf communication significantly and changed the community forever.
In 1988, movement was started when the students of a deaf college (Gallaudet) wanted a deaf president. The school board refused to give the students what the want resulting in a huge protest. Eventually the students won and this was a major accomplishment in the deaf community and impacted the way deaf people live for the better.
