It's hard to be a first-gen. You aren't American enough for the Americans and you aren't Pakistani enough for the Pakistanis.
I know. We have to prove ourselves to both by being extra American or extra Pakistani. We have to be both at the same time and be better at it.
It's more than that. We will always be seen as Pakistani by the Americans and we will only be seen as American by the Pakistanis.
And it's a struggle for us. Even though we are born American, it's hard for some to accept us that way. We shouldn't have to give up the culture of our homeland just to be seen as a member of American society when we are one.
I know what you mean. We're lucky to know our language. But I know some Pakistanis who don't because their parents thought teaching them English in order to assimilate is more important.
I think finding a balance between your birth country and your country of origin is especially important for people like us. We need to be a part of American society but at the same time, we cannot forget what brought us here.
I agree. Since we are a part of both cultures, it's best that we embrace both.
