  • Lincoln had been elected. He got 180 out of 303 of electoral votes. He got a higher percentage than the other candidates with 40%. Lincoln had won every Northern state.
  • The South feared that the Union wouldn't protect Southern rights so they voted to leave the Union on December 20th, 1860. Even though Lincoln and the Republicans promised to keep their southern rights the South didn't trust them.
  • The Senator provided the compromise that anything south of the 36, 30 N line latitude would be slavery but the North and South didn't agree with that decision.
