This quote symbolizes that their hair grows longer and in addition to that they become more uncivilized. All of the boys are starting to show signs of aggression and instability.
Ralph is clearly becoming more violent as the days go on. Earlier on Ralph didn't want to hurt a thing however his aggression now is becoming much more visible.
The kids keep suggesting ideas that seem more and more uncivilized as time passes. Ralph who has more of a leader figure should be keeping things in order yet he is becoming more like the rest of them.
