  • Mariam Enduring the Unendurable
  • "I thought about you all the time . I used to pray that you'd live to be a hundred years old. I didn't know.I didn't know that you were ashamed of me." Pg.55
  • Mariam Enduring the Unendurable
  • "I've been thinking, that maybe we should have a proper burial. For the baby, I mean. Just us, a few prayers, nothing more." Pg.95
  • Mariam shows the theme of enduring the unendurable by enduring her mothers death. Mariam was at jails house over night which causes Mariam to being to think Nanas death was her fault. She she begins to think that if she wasn't gone for so long that this wouldn't have happened causing her to truly endured accepting in her mind that she is the reason for all of this.
  • Mariam shows the theme of enduring the unendurable towards Jalil after marrying Rasheed and is saying goodbye to him. She expresses to Jalil how she feels and goes on to let him know that she doesn't want him to ever come visit her because he never really cared for her. By Mariam sharing her pain with Jalil it allows her to accept the pain and see the reality.
  • Mariam shows the theme of enduring the unendurable by enduring the death of her child. Mariam having a miscarriage really made Mariam used and made her think this was "karma" or something for "causing" Nanas suicide. By Mariam wanting to burry the baby it shows how she is accepting the death of the child.
