Billy sadly died on June 9th 2019. His cause of death was flying into a wind turbine.
Billy Buck 2017-2019
So I was thinking about how Billy died and I was wondering what are the advantages and disadvantages of wind energy for us ducks?
One hour after the funeral...
Well there are many but I'll start with the disadvantages.
Oh my! That's awful!
The main risk is us flying into the wind turbines and causing a collision. But another thing that we could fly into is the power lines that transport electricity from the farms to the consumers. The more power lines that they build, the higher the duck mortality rate gets.
But wait, there's more. Many wind turbine farms are built on wetlands where we breed. Since the turbines are taking up the area, our breeding density has decreased by 21%.
That's crazy. But what I'm confused about is why they keep building these farms if they are harming us ducks?
Well that's where the advantages come in. Wind energy does not pollute the air or the environment. They don't release particulate matter, nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxides so the air and environment is cleaner and safer for us ducks and other animals.
Well that seems great!
It is! Also, wind is a renewable resource. So we will never run out because it can reproduce.
Wow! Looks like there are many advantages and disadvantages to wind energy. And hopefully we don't have another wind turbine incident again.
