Overpopulation in China was such a problem that in 1980 it made the one-child policy, which allowed each family in China only one child. Today, however China faces the opposite problem which is a result of this policy.
In 2016, the Chinese government announced all families will be allowed to have two children in order to help the aging population issue. It did not work. The fertility rate continued to fall.
The declining population may hurt China's economy and its labor force. With fewer workers the government could struggle to pay for a population that is growing older and living longer.
