The old man and the narrator both lives in a huge mansion. The narrator, like a caretaker, who is responsible to take care of the old man, including feeding, entertainment, sleeping.
The narrator disliked and had intense feelings towards the old man's eye. Which the narrator describes it as a "vulture." He plans to kill the old man
The narrator stalks the old man in his sleep for 7 days straight until the eighth night, he dropped his lantern and awakened the old man in his sleep. It was pitch black in the room, so the old man did not notice the narrator being in the room
The narrator kills the old man by choking him to death. Later he dissects his body parts to hid them underneath the wooden planks of the room
The neighbors heard loud shrieks from the narrator's mansion. The neighbor's suspicion led the police to arrive at the narrator's house for investigation. He showed the three policeman around the house and lied to them by saying the shrieks were from his dream. He welcomed them with tea and the narrator sat on top of the old man's corpse under the floor.
The narrator feels guilt. Killing the old man made him to hear the sound of the heart beat of the old man's but really it's him being nervous about the police finding out it the murderer was him. He revealed the dead man's body under the floor to the police and he was arrested and taken to a mental hospital or prison
