Beatty knows about the books that Montag is hiding. Beatty commands him to burn down his own house. Montag obeys but then he burns Beatty.
Montag borrows some of Faber's clothes and runs to the river. He is being chased and desperately needs to escape. Montag decides to float down the river.
Montag meets a group of book lovers in the woods that are led by Granger. Later that night, the city is destroyed by bombs. Everyone is dead.
It is now up to Montag and the book lovers to rebuild society. Montag remembers a passage from the Book of Ecclesiastes that talks about a time to sew, a time to reap, and the tree of life.
