Storyboard Text

  • In 1807 the sailing ship Commerce arrived in Whangaroa Harbour for restocking of food and resources.
  • The captain of the Commerce showed the Maori's a pocket watch. The Maori's had never seen one before and believed it to be an atua waka or reciprocal of the gods.
  • To the Maoris this was a bad omen.
  • That night the Commerce slipped away without the usual protocols and farewells.
  • The Maori's had no idea what was happening. They believed that the watch that was dropped in their harbour had poisoned it.
  • The Commerce also brought the flu to New Zealand. With no resistance to the disease, 60 Maori died.
  • In December 1809 the Boyd anchored in Whangaroa Harbour. For trading of Kauri Spars.
  • Before it's arrival in New Zealand, Hori Te Ara (a son of a local Maori chief) had been whipped for refusal to work.
  • For what the sailors did to Hori Te Ara and what happened 2 years ago in the harbour the Maori wanted revenge. They killed all of them so fast not a single shot from the Europeans was fired.
  • Hori Te Ara and his brother Te Puhi lured captain John Thomson and 3 other boat loads of sailors to the Ngati Uru tribe.
  • All bodies were eaten and when night fell, the Maori disguised themselves them in the clothes of the sailors to attack the Boyd.
