King of Geats and Beowulf's Uncle Hygelac is killed in battle against Shylings.
Beowulf takes over the kingdom in replacement of King Hygelac. He continues to rule for the next fifty years. Over the years he grows into a great and wise king.
A thief steals a goblet from the dragon. The dragon is furious and goes a rampage scorching everything in his path. He eventually reaches Beowulf's home and burns down his throne room.
Beowulf grieves over the lose of his home. He sits and reflects on his life to figure out what he has done to deserve such cruel punishment from the gods.
Poet goes into a flashback, He states that after King Hygelac's death, Beowulf was offered the throne because Hygelac's son was inexperienced and too young to take the throne. Beowulf instead became a mentor to him until his son came to a tragic end in a battle with the Swedes. Beowulf takes over as ruler and brings Sweden to its knees avenging Hygelac.
Flashing back to the present, Beowulf takes 11 of this best men with him into battle. On there way they recover the thief who stole the goblet and bring them with him. They arrive at the cliff outside the barrow where Beowulf gives a speech about the war between the Geats and the Swedes.
