Hermes visited Hades along with the suitor's ghosts. While there, he saw Agamemnon and Achilles who were arguing about who had the better death. In Hades, the topic of Odysseus came up when the suitor's ghosts informed Agamemnon and Achilles about what happened and how Penelope tricked them. Agamemnon explains that he is happy for Odysseus.
BOOK 24: PEACE
AGAMEMNON"No, my death was better!"
ACHILLES"My death was better!"
I will trick him then tell him I have returned and am not dead...
LAERTES"Stranger, my son is not here. He is probably dead."..."I want to believe you, please show me proof."
ODYSSEUS"I met your son five years ago and I was hoping to see him again."...“Father—I am your son—myself, the man you’re seeking, home after twenty years, on native ground at last" (Homer, 403).
Odysseus showed Laertes proof that he was in fact Odysseus. Laertes realized that it was his son so they went to have supper with Telemachus and others.
EUPHITES"We need to find Odysseus and destroy him!"
HALITHERSES"No! We must not fight."
TOWNSPEOPLE"We don't care we are going to fight!"
ATHENA"Will you prolong the pain, the cruel fighting here or hand down pacts of peace between both sides" (Homer, 408).
ZEUS"I won't tell you what to do but I am going to send you down there."
Euphites, along with volunteers(left) decide to attack Odysseus(right).Odysseus fights back with his men including his father, Laertes and Dolius. Odysseus and his men are winning and many people on the opposing side are dead.
Athena ordered them to stop fighting and they did. Then, "Athena handed down her pacts of peace between both sides for all the years to come" (Homer, 410).
