Our story starts with a man by the name of Charles Schenck during WWI. He started to distribute leaflets that stated that the draft violated the 13th Amendment and urged the public to disobey the draft peacefully.
Take a pamphlet! Don't support the war efforts!
People discovered this and the word spread of Schenck spreading these leaflets because people started to follow them. He was accused of being part of the conspiracy to violate the Espionage Act of 1917 by discouraging people to join the military.
