When Fr. Jeremiah O'Flynn arrived in Sydney, he noticed there was no Catholic Priest in the colony. So he himself secretly started to perform the sacraments of baptism and marriage. Jeremiah held private masses in people's homes.
Many of the convicts in the colony had converted to Catholicism. The governor maquarie had found out about his scheme. He then ordered Jeremiah O'flynn back to London on the 20th of May 1818. He was not to return to NSW.
Fr.Jeremiah O'Flynn returned to Ireland and then to the west indies. In 1822, he arrived in Philadelphia where he spent his final years, he later died on the 8th of February 1831.
