  • Responsibility of the fire is distributed between the boys on the island-Jack & his crew
  • "Beneath the capering boys a quarter of a mile square of forest was savage with smoke and flame." (Lowry 44)
  • "I can't see no smoke," said Piggy incredulously. "I can't see no smoke Ralph-where is it?" (Lowry 66)
  • The boys have a desire to keep the fire alive to have a chance at being rescued. They NEED the fire.
  • "Hasn't you got any sense? we've got to relight that fire! you never thought of that, jack, did you?" (Lowry 102)
  • The fire is burning down and their hope begins to fade. They are losing their sanity.
  • " So we can't have a signal fire- were beaten."
  • The fire is gone and they have faced the fact that they will have to find another means of survival on the island. They're defeated in a sense.

  • The fire takes on a new form as Jack uses it for violence rather than a saving grace.
