James Cook, a captain in the Royal Navy and a skilled cartographer, decided to take a team of explorers and sail in search of new land and gold.

In order to successfully complete his journey, James needed sponsorship from the King and Queen of England. The goal of his trip was to establish new English colonies.
In around 1768, James Cook and his crew set sail for the unknown. With the help of an astronomer on board, Cook was able to navigate the seas by using constellations.
In 1769, Cook and his man landed on what is now modern day New Zealand and claimed the land for England.
About on year after claiming New Zealand, Cook landed on what is now present day Australia and claimed it for England. (1770)
After over 2 years at sea, Cook successfully return home and was greeted with open arms.
