Storyboard Text

  • Do you know what a sled is? Or runners or a hill?
  • Today, Jonas, I'm going to give you your first memory.
  • All right, lie down.
  • I'm not sure what that means.
  • The Giver put his hands on Jonas' back and he immediately felt the cold on his back.
  • Jonas, this is called snow, Are you ready.
  • I'm ready, Giver.
  • Suddenly, Jonas was no longer in the Giver's office. Now Jonas sat on what he, somehow, knew to be a sled. He could feel the sled begin to move forward; slowly at first and then faster.
  • This is snow.
  • And runners are carrying the sled.
  • As quickly as it came it went, and Jonas was back on the bede in the Giver's office.
  • They thought snow was an inconvenience, so they took it away. It made growing crops and transporting goods, very difficult.
  • That was exhilarating! Why don't we have snow or hills today?
  • That was a very distant memory, that I had to pull from generations before us. We haven't had those things for many years.
  • Did my parents have those things? When were they taken away?
  • "I wish we had those things, still. Just now and then"(Lowry 84).
  • I agree, but it is not our decision to make. We do not get to designate what is affected by sameness. There is nothing we can do.
  • It's not fair that not everyone will be able to experience this.
