  • Young Life of Burke
  • Burke meets his trainer
  • Hello, I'm Joe Parrish, would you like me to be your trainer?
  • Yes, of course!
  • Burke's 1st fight
  • James Burke was born poor. He was an orphan because his mother and father died when he was young, so he never had a proper education.
  • Burke vs Simon Byrne
  • At age 16, Burke went into a bar called the "Spotted Dog" and the owner, Joe Parrish (veteran fighter), became his trainer.
  • Burke comes to America
  • At age 18, Parish had his first real fight! Burke and his opponent fought 50 rounds and won, proving himself as courageous and skilled. He also won 3 out of 4 fights his first year and his fans loved him!
  • Burke's death and achievement
  • In the next 10 years, he won every one of his fights! On May 30, 1833, Burke defeated Simon Byrne, the Irish champion. Byrne died 3 days later and Burke was tried for his murder, but eventually freed.
  • Later on, Burke arrived in New Orleans as wolrd champoin and was challenged by the unskilled Samuel O'Rourke (Byrne's friend) and Burke won! He galloped away and never collected his prize money due to the angry crowd.
  • Unfortunately, Burke died of tuberculosis in 1845 at age 36. He was later placed into the Boxing Hall of Fame in 1966 for his outstanding achievements!
