  • "He seemed all head, with a tiny body which was red and shriveled like an old man's. "
  • rising action 
  • "If I so much as picked up my cap, he'd start crying to go with me and Mama would call from where she was, "Take Doodle with you." He was a burden in many ways."

  • "When Doodle was five years old, I was embarrassed at having a brother of that age who couldn't walk, so I set out to teach him. "
  • Doodle is born in the late summer of the early 1910's  s and everyone believes he isn't "all there".

  • Doodle became old enough to go out with the narrator. His dad built him a wagon and the narrator dreadfully pulls him around with him.

  • "I ran as fast as I could, leaving him far behind with a wall of rain dividing us." 
  • Doodles brother teaches him how to walk and prepares him for school in the fall.

  • "For a long time, it seemed forever, I lay there crying, sheltering my fallen scarlet ibis from the heresy of rain."
  • Doodle and his family discover the dead Ibis. Doodle decides to bury it. 
  • "Even death did not mar its grace, for it lay on the earth like a broken vase of red flowers, and we stood around it, awed by its exotic beauty." 
  • While caught in a storm, Doodle's brother runs ahead and lightning hits a tree and kills Doodle.
  • Doodle's brother discovers him dead and cry's while holding him, angry his pride took over him.
