Sins of the Aral Sea assignment
This storyboard does not have a description.
The Aral Sea was one of the biggest inland seas in the world, but that was in the past.
A man named Yusup Kamalov has agreed to show me what the Aral Sea looks like now.
This is a salt storm.
The Soviets thought that a sodium chloride crust would form on the surface of the sea, but they were wrong.
There was even a Soviet bio weapons testing facility here where animals and such were subjected to numerous diseases in order to see if the diseases could be offensively used.
The Soviets used the Aral Sea with abandon in order to produce cotton.
Today all that's left is a small amount of water further north held by a dam to prevent it from drying up.
