From Jan to June of the election year, states have primary and caucuses. And from June to September, the parties have conventions where they choose their candidates
In September to October, candidates participate in debates. You must've seen this between Trump and Hillary in 2016. Election day is here in early November!
People vote for their electors by casting their vote in for the state into the Electoral college.
Finally in early Jan of the next year, congress counts the electoral votes to see who has won the presidency
