The Religious Ceremony Attack
Cortes makes it to the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan, in Mexico.
Cortes takes Aztec leader Montezuma hostage, determined to break the Aztecs' power.
After Fighting for Several Months
While Cortes, who now controlled Tenochtitlan, was away, some conquistadors attack the Aztecs during a religious ceremony. The Aztecs fight back, and the conquistadors fight their way out of Tenochtitlan.
The next year, Cortes and native allies who resented Aztec rule mount a siege on the Aztecs.
Several months of fighting later, the Aztec leader is captured by the Spanish. The Aztec resistance collapses, and the city is in ruins.
