  • We need more raw and natural resources!
  • Japan’s leaders wanted raw and natural materials, but had none of their own, so they decided to take control of other countries.
  • The British had noticed these acts of brutality against these countries and decided to act in 1941. On November 16, 1941 the British, Canadian and Indian troops are now in China, outnumbering the Japanese army 3- to- 1.  
  • As the Japanese were planning and preparing for their attack on Hong Kong Island everyone's life went on as normal. The Canadian were assigned to barracks on the island as well. 
  • The first attack from the Japanese army was on the morning of December 8th, 1941, it was an air attack, however Hong Kong’s air force only consisted of five old airplanes.
  • On December 18th the Japanese had fought their way onto the island, resulting in Canadian troops such as, The Winnepeg Grenadiers and The Royal Rifles of Canada, retreating.
  • On Christmas morning of 1941 the Japanese attacked St. Stephen’s Hospital, 5 were killed, multiple injured and sexually abused.
