Nothing, really. I'm just wondering, why is there a squeaking sound coming from the bench when I sit on it?
See what I mean?
Well, that's because you are exerting a force on the bench, and the bench is old so it can't withstand the force much.
What's a force?
A force is a push or pull in a particular direction. For example, you were applying a downward force to the bench, and the bench squeaked because you sat on it.
Forces can also be combined. For example, if I were to sit next to you on the bench, both of our combined weights would create two forces going in the same direction, otherwise known as combined forces.
That makes sense. But what if equivalent forces were acting in different directions?
Then they would be balanced forces. If you were pushing on a block with 5 newtons and I was pushing with that same force but on the opposite side of the block, the block would not move. Since the forces acting against the block don't make the block move, the forces are balanced. Conversely, unbalanced forces are forces that cause an object to move
What are newtons?
Newtons are a measure of force, named after Isaac Newton, the man who discovered gravity.
