  • Exposition
  • Rising Action/Conflict
  • I mean no harm. I am Sanger Rainsford.
  • It is my pleasure to welcome you, Sanger Rainsford.
  • Rising Action/Conflict
  • Hunting got too easy for me. But, there is one animal that can reason.
  • You can't possibly mean that!
  • Rainsford was on his way to hunt in Rio when he heard gunshots and a scream. When he went to look at what was causing the shots, he dropped his pipe and lunged for it. He fell overboard, but managed to swim to shore of Ship-Trap Island.
  • Rising Action/Conflict
  • Rainsford slept, and when he woke up he was very hungry. He found a huge mansion, and when he knocked, a huge man answered with a gun. General Zaroff then came to the door and invited Rainsford in.
  • Climax/Falling Action
  • Rainsford and General Zaroff ate dinner and talked about hunting. General Zaroff told Rainsford that he grew bored of hunting because it was too easy. Zaroff said that he found the perfect animal that can reason and is cunning. Rainsford was horrified, especially when General Zaroff invited Rainsford to hunt with him.
  • Resolution
  • Rainsford refused to hunt with General Zaroff, so General Zaroff decided that he would hunt Rainsford. Rainsford went out in the day, and Zaroff said he would start after him in the evening. During the night, Rainsfor climbed a tree to hide in. Zaroff found him, but didn't kill him because Zaroff wanted the game to last longer. In the morning, Rainsford set a trap that would make a tree fall on Zaroff. It didn't kill him, but it did injure his shoulder.
  • Rainsford set another trap by the swamp that was a pit with sharp sticks at the bottom. It did not kill General Zaroff, but it got one of his best hounds. Once again, Rainsford set another trap. It was designed so that when the string connected to the sapling would spring forward and kill Zaroff. Once again, the trap did not get the intended target, but it got the servant for Zaroff. Rainsford ran to the cliffs, and because the hounds were on his trail, he jumped into the ocean.
  • General Zaroff thought that the jump from the cliffs killed Rainsford, so he went back to his mansion and ate dinner. When Zaroff went into his room, Rainsford was in there waiting for him. They wanted to end the game, and whoever won would stay and sleep in the bed, but whoever lost would be fed to teh hounds. Rainsford thought that it was an incredibly comfortable bed.
