  • There are many illegal deforesters in the Amazon rainforest. 20 people alone caused over $250,000 of environmental damage.
  • People chop down trees in the Amazon on public land and divide it up. Once it is divided they sell it to farmers and ranchers illegally.
  • One tenth of Brazil's population live in the Amazon, which needed to be cut down in order to live there. Now they are accused of illegally deforesting, but the government doesn't want to put all of them in jail, so they lowered the Forest Code.

  • Brazil is the largest exporter of beef in the whole world. About 90 million cattle are being raised in Brazil, so the Amazon rainforest needs to be cut down to make more room.

  • The Brazilian government is designing a new tool to help stop illegal deforestation called the Cadastro Ambiental Rural. It will register property limites into a national database.
