- China was weakened by internal and external events that prevented them from industrializing to the fullest extent.
- Foreign countries are taking over.
- As a result of China's decline. The Manchu government decided to initiate reforms that will be know as the Self-Strengthening movement.
- The government is really weak.
- One of these events is the Boxer Rebellion which was caused by the invasion of westerners and their Christian missionaries when foreign countries such as France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Austria-Hungary, and Japan had a great amount of power in China’s economy.

- After the Boxer Rebellion, in 1901, China signed a protocol called the “Boxer Protocol” which is considered to be China's most destructive treaty. This treaty weakened China because they had to restore damages they caused, and give up more control over their country to the foreign countries.
- My country is in trouble.
- As a result of the Boxer Rebellion you will have to pay for all damages and give majority of control to us
