When 16 year old Jessica is on her way home from a track meet her bus is hit. Her leg is crushed and she has to get it removed. She was heartbroken that she would have to learn how to learn to walk and run again.
We will have to do fundraisers
Do you think we could?
When she got home she was determined to walk again and she wanted to do it as soon as possible but she couldn't always do it how she wanted to do it. Her dog Sherlock would always wake Jessica up at 5:45 am for their morning run. And as much as Jessica wanted to run she couldn't. AT first she didn't want to go back to school but her best friend Fiona was able to convince her.
We are here with the Langston High Track as they are trying to raise money for a prosthhetic running leg for one of their teamates
Help Jessica Run Again!
On the first day back to school Jessica is welcomed back and is pushed around in her wheelchair by Fiona, her best friend. But Fiona isn't in her last period class. Her math teacher, Ms.Rucker makes Jessica sit with a girl named Rosa who has cerebral palsy. Jessica doesn't like the idea of her injury being looked at like a disability, but she does get to know Rosa.
On day during lunch Jessica and Fiona went to Coach Kyro's room and showed him a video of a girl who lost her leg and was running. with a prosthetic running leg. Jessica got very hopful that she could run again but then she realized how much money it will cost so they decided that they would do a fundraiser.
To raise enough money for the prosthetic running leg they did a fundraiser. The first fundraiser made a lot of money but not nearly enough because they needed $20,000. The local news station came and that brought a lot of attention to the fundraiser which brought in a lot of money. But, they still needed $5,000 more until some one anonymously donated the rest.
At the end of the story it explains Jessica pushing Rosa in her wheelchair for 10 milesThis story shows the progression of Jessica and how to never give up no matter how many obstacles you may face. At the end of the story it says, "Today I ran my friend ten miles across her first finish line. Eight months ago I couldn't do anything. This race has made me believe that there's nothing I can't do. This is my new starting line.
