  • A real retreat?
  • No..just tactics after all  
  • Anglo-Saxon stood in a shield war on the top of Senlac Hill. The Normans were stood at the foot of Senlac hill in organised in bands of troops, archers, cavalry amongst the army fired arrows but they missed and went over the Anglo-Saxons
  • Stalemate
  • The Normans look like they retreating encouraging some Anglo Saxons to chase them down the hill

  • This was actually a tactic know as Freyd retreat  (false retreat) the Normans were able to chase and kill those Anglo-Saxons that chased them down the hill.

  • The Anglo-Saxon shield wall remained strong despite the Normans persistence to penetrate it. There was to be a break in battle so that each side could clear the battlefield of their dead.
  • The Normans carried out another Feryd retreat which meant that the Anglo-Saxon line was now being broken and the kings brothers had now been killed. The Normans made their advanced.
  • With the Anglo-Saxon line broken, the real victory came when rumours spread that King Harold had been killed. The remanding Anglo-Saxons fled and it was Victory for Willliam of Normandy
