  • As Salva was walking with the group, he met a new friend named Marial. When it started closer to dark, Salva and Marial found a place to sleep. During the night, Marial went missing, but no one noticed until the morning. Salva's uncle woke him up and said that Marial had been eaten by a lion. After this, Uncle killed every wild animal that might had been dangerous and also comforted Salva through the tragic lose.
  • When Salva's uncle had been shot and killed by the Nuer men, the group become very upset. After burying Salva's uncle, the group decided to keep walking towards the camp. Along the way, the group had been very mean to Salva and wouldn't help him out with getting food. Also, the group said that Salva was too young and weak to walk with them and thought he would slow them down. However, Salva did not let them get him down, but actually this built his confidence even more. Salva thought about his family throughout the rest of the journey to keep him going and not let the group bring him down. He showed the group he was not weak by walking all the way to the camp without slowing them down.
  • After a long day of walking, the group found a place to rest at. As the group is eating, three men start charging at the yelling to sit down and put their hands on their head. The men then took Salva's uncle to a tree and tied him up. A couples of minutes later, there was three gun shots and the three men had ran away. Salva soon discovered that the men shot and killed Salva's uncle. Everyone in the group was depressed. Although the group had been sad, they quickly buried him and went on their way like nothing had happened. Salva may have been upset, but had to keep going with the group. The only thing that kept him going was the thought that his family and uncle would want him to reach the camp safely.
