  • An example of gangs in modern day are gangs in the United States. There have been gangs in the United States dating back to the late 1820s the gangs name was "The 40 Thieves". The 40 Thieves mainly did robberies and muggings but they were also known to be beneficial for corrupt politicians to join.

  • Gangs started a rapid decline between 1990 and 2000 however it has been on a steady increase since. In the past 10 years gang estimates have been found to be around 25,000 in the USA along with 750,000 members.
  • Gangs are usually based in the inner city and 96% of all gang homicides happen in urban areas. In 2009-2012 cities of over 100,000 saw gang related homicides increase by 13%. In Chicago and Los Angeles more then half of all homicides came from gang related violence.

  • Another death was reported today due to gang violence. A 16 year old kid was found dead on a street in the cities core the 32 homicide of the year due to gang violence. A fact about gang violence is that 53% of murders go unsolved here in Chicago. More on this in 10.
