I have never had this antibiotic before, what side effects does it have?
The doctor has prescribed ciprofloxacin, a type of antibiotic, for your urinary tract infection.
Common side effects of ciproflaxcin are headache, nausea, & diarrhea. Also, this medication can cause ruptured tendons or tendonitis. If you have loose, watery stools, or a sudden onset of severe pain and inflammation around your tendons, please contact the doctor immediately.
Be sure to take all of the prescribed pills, even if your symptoms seem to be resolved. Drink plenty of fluids and take this medicine on an empty stomach. Do not take this medication within an hour of taking antacids, calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc preparations, sucraflfates, or dairy products because they can reduce the effects of the medication.
Thank you for the information. Anything else I should know?
Ciprofloxacin is in the fluoroquinolone family of antibiotics. It works by inhibiting DNA synthesis and killing susceptible bacteria. It mainly kills gram-negative bacteria, but can kill some gram-positive bacteria.
Many antibiotics can cause headache, nausea, and diarrhea. Diarrhea is a concern with antibiotics due tothe common occurrence of C.Diff. associated diarrhea. Additionally, ciprofloxacin does have a black box warning for risk of tendonitis or ruptured tendons.
This medication is best absorbed on an empty stomach, so be sure to take it at least 1 hour before, OR 2 hours after a meal. Do not take any antacids, calcium, magnesium, zinc preparations, iron, sucralfate, or consume dairy within one hour of taking this medication. Antibiotics are only effective when they kill all of the bacteria causing your infection. It is very important that you finish all of the pills in your prescription, even if you begin feeling better after just a couple of doses.
