- Something even more disgusting is how these slave owners discipline their slaves. Slaves got horrible punishments, sometimes even for things that weren't so bad. They were very often physically abused because of this.

- 2: I know, I know. These are real people getting treated like property by these southerners. Your father and I are actually part of the abolitionist movement, which is a movement around here to try to abolish and get rid of slavery.
- 1: I feel so bad! All of this sounds completely horrible. Why aren't we doing anything about this?

- 2: Of course, Abigail. It was about time you learned more about the harsh conditions of slavery going on in the south anyway.
- 1: Thank you for teaching me about it mom.
- Slaves were disciplined very harshly. If they did anything that showed to be disobedient or that was viewed as a violation of some sort, it was punishable. These punishments included things such as shackling, beating, and branding. Slaves were also just abused sometimes so that their owners could assert their dominance over them.
- Today Abby learned about slavery and what her parents thought about it. She also found out about the abolitionist movement taking place and what it was trying to accomplish.
