Due to the amount of violence and rebelling happening, Louis XVI and his family tried to escape to Austria; Fearing for their safety, though they were arrested, captured and imprisoned. Soon, they were executed by the guillotine. Before their escape and execution, a man named Robespierre led the National Assembly and created the Committee of Public safety to protect the new republic from outside threats and internal rebellion. This led to the execution of thousands and was known as the "Reign of Terror".
A cause of the revolution was the amount of debt due to costly wars. To solve this issue Louis XVI called the Estates General, made up of the 1st,2nd and 3rd Estates. The 3rd estate, didnt like how things were going during the meeting so they formed the National Assembly. Only to be locked out later.
They then broke into an indoor tennis court and decided they wouldn't leave until they made a constitution of their own. This event became known as the "Tennis Court Oath"
"WE are not to separate, and to reassemble wherever circumstances require, until the constitution of the kingdom is established".
Resulting in the people storming/breaking into the Bastille prison to retrieve guns out of retaliation. This key event is recognized as the start of the revolution.
Shortly after Louis XVI sent troops to paris to stop brawls over food shortages; but the people took it as a provocation.
"LIVE AMONG THE PEOPLE!" "LIVE AMONG THE PEOPLE!"
Another key cause of the revolution was the bad harvests, which caused the price of flour and bread to rise drastically and the majority of the population were poor and couldn't afford it. So women marched in a riot to the palace of versailles; demanding he "live among the people". He eventually went back with them to Paris and was placed under the "protection" of the National Guards.
"Victory belongs to the most persevering."
Soon, Robespierre is executed after becoming a target of conspiracies, the Reign of Terror is over and the National Assembly approved the new constitution and created the Directory, which became corrupt over the years. Eventually, a coup d'etat overthrew the 5 leaders and were replaced with 3 new ones. One of them being Napoleon Bonaparte.
Napoleon's coup d'etat marked the end of the French revolution when he took power and eventually became France's emperor in 1804
