  • Black Regiments were black men that could finally fight in the war.  The 54th Massachusetts Infantry was one of the first offical black units in the U.S. armed forces: Fort Wagner.
  • Black soldiers were not allowed to serve in the union army until Jan. 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation. Black regiment were in the war from Jan. 1 1863 till Apr. 9, 1865 the end of the war.

  • They were helping the north fight for their freedom and help the U.S become one again.
  • The U.S.A. to be  1 Together 
  • By the end of the war, 179,000 black men (10% of the union army) served as soldiers for the U.S army. 19,000 served for the navy. Nearly 40,000 black soldiers died from the war and 30,000 died from infraction or disease over time
  • The black regiments help the union have more soldiers, made more conflict between north and south : advantage to north. and help show that black soldiers will fight for others and our country. Everyone is alike. All one.
  • It shows how people were wrong about slavery in the first place. The black regiment made a difference. 
  • Senator Howell Cobb of Georgia said, ¨..if slaves make good soldiers, then our whole theory of slavery was wrong.¨
