  • Prince Siddhartha Gotama was born in around 500bc in modern day Nepal. when he was born he walked 8 steps in all directions and lotuses erupted from his feet.
  • 4 Sights
  • A wise man gave a prophecy that young Siddhartha would become either a great king or a person of religious significance. His father, the current king, decided that he wanted his son to be the former, but the wise man said that if the boy-prince ever saw suffering he would become the latter. The king banned him from leaving the palace grounds
  • Ascetic Period
  • Siddhartha Lived a life of luxury within the palace. he was protected from the outside world and didn't see any suffering. At the age of 16, he was the father of a family with children and his wife, a beautiful princess. However, he started to question his existence and wanted to leave the palace.
  • Enlightenment
  • One day, Siddhartha, left the palace and saw 4 things he couldn't have imagined. A sick man, he never had known sickness. An old man, he didn't know you could grow old. A dead man, he couldn't have even contemplated the thought of death. Finally he saw a holy man and he saw that there was hope.

  • He decided that he would try and find the cause of the suffering he had found, he shaved and became a holy man. He joined a group of Hindu monks that told him to find the answer he must go all but without sustenance. However, after eating only three grains of rice a day, he fell sick and decided that like a middle way was the best thing
  • Then, at the age of around 35, he left the monks and meditated under a tree for 46 days. Here, he discovered the four noble truths and became enlightened, he became the Buddha.
