Hercules cousin Eurystheus ordered Hercules to go to the underworld to kidnap Cerberus. This terrifying beast that guarded the entrance to the Underworld allowed death to enter and nothing to come out. Cerberus was a three headed dog with a dragon's tail, the heads of snakes going from his head to his back, lion’s claws, and jaws which constantly flowed poison.
Call to Adventure
He went to Eleusis to meet a wise priest called Eumolpus to prepare for his journey. The priest new secrets called Eleusinian Mysteries. It was believed that those who knew the secrets between Demeter and Persephone were granted happiness in the Underworld. After Hercules met a few conditions to get the secrets Eumolpus told him the secrets.
Meeting with the Mentor
As Hercules approached the Underworld he encountered monsters, heroes and ghosts as he made his way to Hades and Cerberus. He even engaged in a wrestling match.
The Supreme Ordeal
When Hercules found the beast he threw his arms around all of the beasts three heads. Cerberus bit Hercules in his arm but that didn't stop him. Eventually Cerberus gave up.
Hercules walked back with Cerberus and gave the beast to Eurystheus thinking about what his cousin wants to do with the beast.
The Road Back
In the end Hercules learned that he was stronger then he thought he was and he made Zeus and Eurystheus proud by doing a task beyond his comfort.
