Oh man! Tam usually understands materials in class, and does well on the Exit tickets, but lately they're not submitting homework, and this assessment score is concerning. 55%! I need to request a meeting with their parents.
Welcome to Grade 7English
Hello, Smith family! Thank you for coming in today. I know it's difficult for you all to take off work, so I want to be open in communicating how much I appreciate you setting time aside for this meeting about Tam's progress in English. I assume you saw their test results?
Thanks for having us. We know how much Tam loves your class. We're so surprised with this score. What happened?
I understand your concern. It's true, Tam is one of my stronger students. They pick up the material pretty quickly and are able to help their peers when they have questions. I always appreciate their help. I always give the students exit tickets at the end of our class to check that they learned, and Tam is consistently able to complete them. Here are some of their responses, and here's the record of how they do.
Okay, so why does that column have so many X's?
Well, to be honest, we don't really see Tam doing their homework. By the time we get home, they are usually playing video games or watching TV.
Those are for the entry tickets we do at the start of the next lesson. I give these to the students to check if they completed their homework and if they retained what they learned. This is where ( ) struggles. Have you seen them doing their homework? Do they seem to be struggling with that, too?
We always assumed they finished before we got home!
