Zach is a fifteen year old african american who is great at football . For this he doesn't wish to play ball he wishes to be a layer and to stand for those to be stood up for. The book goes on and he changes from one side to the oppsoite

August is a very independent woman who owns her own honey company. She starts off to be a little mean to lily but then they both see each other as people and not skin color .
T.Ray is the father of lily he is very mean to himself and lily . He is mad because of his past ;he doesn't know how to be a good father, Hes angry at his past and annoyed of the choices that people had made in his past
May isn't very independant there are many things that if she didn't have she wouldn't be able to understand or live life . One thing that is necessary for lily to have in her life is her wailing wall. Even though she isn't independent she holds the family together in a way .
