In the beginning, Mr. White is playing chess with his son Herbert. Mrs. White is knitting by the fire. They were talking when an old friend, Sergeant-Major Morris comes in. They start talking about a Monkeyś Paw. Morris explains what the Monkey Paw is.
Morris gives the Paw to the family and tells them to be careful of what you wish for. After Morris leaves, the family wishes for 200 pounds of money. Nothing happens except for, the Paw moves. The family goes to bed thinking the paw is rubbish.
The next day, Herbert heads into town to go to his job. He does not return. A man arrives to the couples house. He explains that Herbert was caught in the machinery and his dead. He tells them that out of his sympathy, he gives them 200 pounds of moneys and then leaves. The couple is distraught.
A week goes by, and every night the mom cries. One night she wakes the father up. She yells at him to go get the monkey paw. Once the father brings the Paw up, he wishes for his son to be alive. Nothing happens except that the Paw moves. Everyone goes back to bed.
Mrs. White hears knocking. She runs down the stairs thinking Herbert is at the stairs. Mr. White grabs the Paw and wishes his last wish.
The banging stops. Mrs. White opens the door and all she sees, is the deserted road in front of her.
