Ohio behind usWhen we ask our mother how long we'll be here, sometimes she says for a while and sometimesshe tells us not to ask anymorebecause she doesn't know how long we'll stayin the house where she grew upon the land she always known. When we ask she tells us,this is where she used to belongbut her sister, Caroline, our aunt Kay, has movedto the north, her brother Odell is dead now,and her baby brother, Robert, says he's almost savedenough money to follow Caroline to New York City.Maybe I should go there, too, my mother says.Everyone else, she says, has a new place to be now.Everyone elsehas gone away. And now coming back homeisn't really coming back homeat all.
How long are we going to be here?
I picked this because it shows the kids wanting to go home. Their mom thought that coming to her home that she grew up in would be good. She figured out that it wasn't the same. Since her brothers and sisters had all moved away it didn't feel the same for her. It shows the kids kind of irritating their mom about it and their mom not sure what they're going to do. Later in the story their mom finally decides to move to New York. They figure out that it was a really good choice.
