  • The Cuban political activist Jose Marti tried to achieve independence for Cuba. Unfortunately Spain was the most powerful colonial nation
  • Independence for Cuba
  • The Spanish military forced Cubans into camps where thousands died from hunger and disease. In 1898 The US went to war with Spain to help.
  • On December 10, 1898 The Treaty Of Paris was signed and Spain freed Cuba. Meanwhile, many Cubans couldn't support themselves. The U.S. then used Cuba for economic purposes by dominating their various industries, imports, and exports.
