  • The people who made the riot burned down buildings and attacked innocent African Americans and more than 100 people died in New York City. The South suffered shortage of food and other goods. Southeners also lost property when the Union marched through.
  • The Union army won another key victory farther west in 1863 during the battle of Gettysburg. Troops under General Ulysses S. Grant attacked Vicksburg in Mississippi. This was the Confederate fort by the Mississippi River and this split the Confederacy in half making General Grant a hero in the North. In 1864 Lincoln gave Grant command of all Union forces and with that he planned to attack the South from 2 sides.
  • The North had more men and equipment then the South so Grant kept attacking no matter how many men he lost which got him the nickname butcher. Soon many confederate soldiers lost hope and left the army and went home. On April 9 1865 the Union marched into Richmond and on April 9 General Lee surrendered. Grant let the Confederate keep their horses and share food with the North. After 4 years the Civil war ended.
