Storyboard Description

Chapter 18 pages 168 through 172 I shortened my favorite part of the chapter because I thought it was interesting. The reason I find this chapter more appealing and why I selected it was because I like how Ishmael was away from the drama; even for a short period of time. I think children soldiers should get the treatment that Ishmael is taking and go to rehab for the better of their lives. Nobody doesn't want to stay miserable forever. There is a sense of hope for Ishmael that may impact his life; unlike other children who were impacted with war by being brainwashed, and all theses horrible things that they can do to people. The importance of this scene is that Ishmael is fond with Esther and that the bondage quickly turns into friendship and something more by him always meeting up with her after his class. I think this also teaches Ishmael to be a better person; to be a kid again. I think this part of storyboard effects parts of the novel "I would always run to see her after class to tell her about my day." page 168 At the end of chapter Ishmael is set back to his uncle tommy that Leslie announced to be his uncle; which he haven't seen in years, so this makes his uncle emotional. "what if he is just some man pretending to be my uncle? I thought. The man was crying, which is when I began to believe that he was really my family, because his crying was genuine and men in my culture rarely cried." page 172

Storyboard Text

  • "How about a Shakespeare monologue?"
  • "You can sing your reggae songs, i suggest and insist.
  • "okay, but I still think you should do some music."
  • what is honestly wrong with me!?
  • "Your Gf is here, ishmael. Are we going to
  • see you at all this afternoon?"
  • The following day Esther told me that there were visitors coming to the center. The staff asked the boys to hold a talent show. basically, we were all supposed to do anything that we were good at.
  • Ah, what will I have to do or say?
  • we will write you something to read. once your comfortable, do what you want.
  • "how would you like to be the spokeperson  for this center?"
  • she  put her arms around me. I had become very fond of Esther, but I refused to show it. whenever she hugged me or put her arms around me, I would quickly break loose. whenever she left, though, I watched her go. She had a unique and graceful walk. it was almost as if she sailed on the ground.
  • "Are you all right?"
  • "yes,  I am sorry bringing up this matter again. I know it will upset you. we can't locate your immediate family, so we have to find a foster care here in the city.
  • I would always run to see her after class to tell her about my day. My friends Mambu and Alhaji made fun of me.
  • "I am sorry I never came to see you all these years. but we can't go back now. we just have to start from here.
  • "This is your uncle..."
  • They know now that it is possible for you boys to be rehabilitated."I was happy to have a chance to perform again, in peace. But Mr. Kamara was in high spirits.
  • I was called to a room in the hospital where he waited. When he walked into the room, he stood up and greet me. His face showed grief and happiness. I had to ask him what the matter was. Leslie was talking with me at the hospital.
  • Leslie proudly announced my uncle 'tommy'. He was crying, which is when I believed that he was really my family, because his crying was genuine and men in my culture rarely cried.
